In the Old Testament, we have the Scriptures of ancient Israel, containing:
- the earliest stories of the beginning,
- the momentous events of the birth of the nation when, as slaves, they escaped from Egypt under Moses,
- the history of that nation, its kings, its defeats and exile,
- and, finally, its homecoming after many years of 'captivity.'
The flow of history is something like this:
Stories of the beginning in Genesis
The Exodus from Egypt in the time of Moses
Taking the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua. Begins with the battle of Jericho
The beginning of the Kingdom of Israel when Samuel anoints Saul as King... the history of the kingdom, its division, its defeats, ending
with the destruction of the Temple and of Jerusalem. The Babylonian exile begins.
At various times of need and decline God spoke through prophets to His people. 17 books of the Old Testament were written by them.
Before the books of the prophets begin, there are collections of songs, wise sayings, philosophies of life, love stories. These books
include the Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Solomon and so on.
Eventually, in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah the Jewish people return to the Promised Land to rebuild the Temple and the walls of Jerusalem.
