The Miracles of Jesus

Some of the miracles of Jesus are well-known: He changed water into wine; He walked on the water; the feeding of the 5,000; the raising of the dead. These accounts come as no surprise to believers. What else would one expect of the Son of God, come to this earth not only to declare the arrival of the Kingdom of God (God's rule), but to show it in a practical way. However, for people with no definite commitment to faith in God, the idea of miracles can provoke a sceptical response.

Sometimes we hear people suggesting that a miracle is when something impossible happens. Of course, the impossible can never happen - that's why it is impossible. A miracle is when something happens that we would not have thought possible, and for which there is no apparent, natural explanation.

Healings

In the gospels there are many accounts of Jesus healing people, most of whom seemed beyond all hope. They included lepers, blind people, those who were deaf or dumb, paralysed people, as well as those who suffered from fits or appeared to be in the grip of evil or demonic forces.

One story in John chapter 9 tells how Jesus healed a man who had been blind from birth. He spat on the ground and made a sort of paste out of the mud, which He then wiped on the man's eyes. Then Jesus told the man to wash it off in a nearby pool called 'Siloam'. The man did so and his sight was restored. All his acquaintances, and his parents, were amazed. They had known him all his life; they knew he had been blind. The man himself had a simple account of what had happened - "All I know is this: once I was blind but now I can see!" Jesus used the opportunity to show that He had come to bring Light into a world beset by the darkness of ignorance and evil.

Another well-known story concerns four men whose friend was paralysed. They brought him on a sort of stretcher to Jesus, but the house where Jesus was teaching was so packed with people, they could not get in. Not deterred, they climbed on to the flat roof of the house, removed some of the tiles and roof structure, and lowered the man, on his stretcher, right down to the very feet of Jesus. Jesus was impressed by their determination and faith. He told the man to take up his bed and walk. To everyone's astonishment, he did just that. In this miracle Jesus demonstrated that, if He had power to heal, He also had the authority to forgive sins.

What's the Point?

  1. Jesus healed people because He had compassion on anyone who was suffering. God's rule would mean an end of suffering.
  2. Jesus' miracles were also a confirmation that what He was saying was true. With the advent of the Kingdom of God (God ruling in people's lives) sin, evil, even pain and death, would eventually be defeated.
  3. Jesus also referred to His miracles, in a message sent to John the Baptist, as evidence that He was truly the Messiah, the anointed One sent by God.
