Miraculous Authority

Many amazing events are recorded in the four Gospels. Apart from the healings which Jesus did, other miracles seemed to involve the power or authority to set aside or control the laws of nature. Jesus never exercised this authority to impress people or to gain a following.

The Authority to Change Things

There are two episodes in the Bible where Jesus increased a small amount of food in order to feed a large crowd of people: the Feeding of the 5000(Matthew 14) and the feeding of the 4000 (Matthew 15). On the first occasion Jesus took five small barley loaves and two fish, said the blessing and gave to His disciples. They gave to the crowds. Everyone was fed, with 12 baskets full of scraps collected up afterwards.

In the first miracle at the wedding feast of Cana (John 2), Jesus saved the host of the feast embarrassment when the wine ran out. He got the servants to fill six large water jars to the brim with water. When they poured it out it was wine - not any old wine, but the best.

The Authority to Control the Forces of Nature

When Jesus was with His disciples in a boat on the Sea of Galilee, a huge storm arose (Matthew 8). Jesus was asleep. When His terrified disciples woke Him, He seemed surprised at their fear. He rebuked the winds and said, "Peace! Be still!" Immediately there was a calm.

During another storm, Jesus came walking to His disciples on the water. Peter also ventured out of the boat to walk together with Jesus. For a while he wavered and began to sink, but Jesus lifted him up and they both walked on the water.(Matthew 14)

Authority over Death

There are three recorded incidents of Jesus raising people from the dead.
  1. Jairus's daughter (Luke 8): Jairus had a 12 year old daughter who was very ill. He begged Jesus to come and heal her. By the time they arrived, she had died. However, Jesus told the parents not to worry, just to believe. With three of His disciples present, Jesus went into the house where the dead girl was lying. He told her to get up. She did. Not only was she alive but also cured from her illness.
  2. The widow of Nain's only son (Luke 7): Jesus felt very sorry for the widow when He saw the funeral procession following the widow's dead son. He was her only son. He stopped the procession, told the young man to get up and he was restored to life.
  3. Lazarus (John 11): Jesus was a friend Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. When he heard that Lazarus was ill, Jesus did not hurry to get to their house. When He finally arrived, Lazarus had been dead for four days and had been buried. Jesus asked to be taken to the tomb. To their horror, He told them to open the tomb. Then He shouted out, "Lazarus, come out!" And Lazarus, still wrapped in the grave-clothes, came out - very much alive.
