John the Baptist

John the Baptist

John was born some six months before Jesus. His mother Elisabeth and Mary were relatives. Elisabeth and her priest husband, Zacharias, had known, through a special angelic visitation, that their son, whom Elisabeth would bear in their old age, would be special. He would be like the Old Testament prophet, Elijah, who fearlessly proclaimed God's message and warnings when, from the king down, there had been a departure from God and His laws. John too would prepare the way in getting people ready to meet the Lord.

When he grew to manhood, John lived a solitary life of self-denial. He lived in the wilderness of Judea, wearing only rough clothing made of camel hair and feeding on naturally occurring food, such as locusts (which were Kosher according to the Jewish law) and wild honey.

Masses of people came to hear him as he thundered out his message. He urged people to repent of their sins and, to show that their repentance was genuine, he would baptise them in the river Jordan. People believed him to be a prophet sent by God. Some even thought that he was God's promised Deliverer, the Messiah, the Anointed One of God. However, John told them clearly that he was not but that he was, as prophesied some 600 years previously, simply a voice of one crying in the wilderness, "Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him... And all mankind will see God's salvation."

Try these tasks:
  1. Explain the meaning of these words:
    1. repentance
    2. prophet
    3. Messiah
    4. baptism
  2. How, do you think, would John have baptised people?
  3. If you had had the opportunity of asking John three questions, what would they have been?
  4. Find a partner to pretend to be John. Imagine how he would have answered those questions.
