When Jesus was Baptised
These are the significant things that the Bible tells us about the baptism of Jesus:
- Jesus was about 30 years old
- John was amazed that Jesus had asked to be baptised. John argued that it should be Jesus who was baptising him. John recognised that Jesus was a sinless man and, therefore,
did not need to repent or seek forgiveness.
- "As soon as Jesus was baptised, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on Him. And
a voice from heaven said, 'This is My Son, Whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.'" Matthew 3 vv 16, 17.
| Christians believe that Jesus was baptised to show that He, as the representative of sinful humanity,
was about to embark upon the work which He came to do - to save people from their sins: to secure forgiveness from God by sacrificially taking their place and punishment.
The first step in that mission was to show that repentance was essential. |
