When Jesus was Baptised

These are the significant things that the Bible tells us about the baptism of Jesus:
  • Jesus was about 30 years old
  • John was amazed that Jesus had asked to be baptised. John argued that it should be Jesus who was baptising him. John recognised that Jesus was a sinless man and, therefore, did not need to repent or seek forgiveness.
  • "As soon as Jesus was baptised, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on Him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is My Son, Whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.'" Matthew 3 vv 16, 17.

Christians believe that Jesus was baptised to show that He, as the representative of sinful humanity, was about to embark upon the work which He came to do - to save people from their sins: to secure forgiveness from God by sacrificially taking their place and punishment.

The first step in that mission was to show that repentance was essential.

Tongues of fire also symbolise the Holy Spirit - see Pentecost!
