The Temptations of Jesus

When Jesus had been baptised, immediately he retired to the wilderness area of Judaea where he fasted for forty days. At then end of the fasting, He was, of course, very hungry. At this time, when, physically He would have been very weak, the devil came to Him to tempt Him. It would seem that, at the very start of His work and ministry, someone was trying to throw Him off course.

There were three temptations:

  1. The devil suggested that, if He were the Son of God, then surely He could turn the stones of the wilderness into bread. Bearing in mind how hungry Jesus was it must have been quite an appealing thought... but there was a huge temptation to doubt in that word "if". Jesus replied from the Bible: "It is written, 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
  2. Then, the devil took Him to the highest point of the Temple in Jerusalem and suggested that, if He were the Son of God, He could throw Himself from the top, but no harm would come to Him for surely God would arrange for the angels to catch Him. Jesus again replied from the Bible, "It is written, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
  3. In the third temptation, the devil took Jesus to the top of a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world. The devil promised Him all these kingdoms, if He would only bow down and worship him. Jesus said, "Away from me, satan! For it is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.'"
The temptations of Jesus are important. They show us that:
  • It is not wrong to be tempted
  • Jesus experienced human weakness and difficulties
  • As trials they showed not weakness but the very strength of Jesus - they brought out His true nature and character

Think about each of the three temptations.

Were they bad things that the devil was telling Jesus to do?
Why would it have been wrong for Jesus to have given in to them?
Think of a reason for each one.
